Christmas for Kids: The Miraculous Magical Balloon

Our special children’s program Christmas for Kids will make its return with a brand-new twist, featuring Synetic Theater in collaboration with Young Audiences of Maryland.

Expressed through movement, masks, pantomime illusions, and dazzling choreography, The Miraculous Magical Balloon tells the story of a traveling actor and his magical trunk full of toys, tricks, and surprises. Perfect for audiences of all ages! Paata Tsikurishvili first learned this show from his master teacher, Igor Romanov, in Georgia 45 years ago, and he and Irina first performed it in America at the Kennedy Center in 1996. Since then, The Miraculous Magical Balloon has delighted audiences all over the world.

This performance will be outdoors with social distancing at The Chrysalis at Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods. Masks are required for this performance. You may bring your own lawn chairs or picnic blankets. Lawn chairs will be available for rent at the concert venue. Warm refreshments and snacks will also be available for purchase.

Artists

Synetic Theater emerged from the creative vision of founders Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili, Georgian artists who moved to the United States in the 1990s. Trained in dance, theatre and film, the Tsikurishvilis combine traditions of the Caucasus with distinctly American styles to tell classic stories through movement, music, technology and visual arts.

Synetic Theater was founded in 2001 and made its artistic debut with the first wordless Shakespeare production, Hamlet…the rest is silence, thrilling audiences with its athletic and high-voltage physical theatre. Synetic’s innovative take on Hamlet earned three Helen Hayes Awards – for Outstanding Resident Play, Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Director. Synetic would go on to win dozens more Helen Hayes Awards with over 100 nominations to date, recognition from the American Theatre Wing as an emerging theatre company to watch, and the honor of “Washingtonians of the Year” from Washingtonian Magazine for co-founders Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili.

Synetic produces four to five mainstage productions and two to three family series productions per season, while also running an educational studio for children and adults, conducting community outreach programs, and touring family and mainstage productions and reaching over 36,000 patrons annually.

To ensure the safety of everyone this season we will be implementing social distance seating at all venues. In keeping with public health and local government guidelines, facemasks will be required at concerts until further notice.
